I think the win/loss paradigm isn't the best one for evaluating it. Both candidates seemed to have very different objectives.
Biden seemed intent on a performance that would raise the morale of dems/libs. That appears to have been successful as Obama supporters report being happy with it. However I doubt that his sneering and condescension was viewed positively by many people who weren't already Obama supporters.
Ryan's intent seemed to be to appeal to women and seniors, and to look credible in a presidential context. The polls indicate that he was successful with those objectives, but I don't think he did anything that would change the mind of Obama supporters.
