I think Clannad is incredibly over-rated. It's not that good at all. What I can say it is good for is an 'escape.' The world of Clannad is so nice and harmless - nothing like the real world.

Nice and harmless? Did you watch all of it? Are you forgetting the part where *spoiler* Nagisa becomes pregnant? Falls sick? Repeats Senior year 3 times? Dies from child birth? And then Tomoyo abandons lil baby Ushio for 5 years? That as soon as he comes to terms with a father he once held incredible disdain for and begins to repair his relationship with his daughter she dies? Totally Harmless.
The only bullshit with Clannad are the scifi elements and the trick ending, which I choose to think of as an alternate one.
Clannad has strong story progression and very little fanfare. The characters grow up, their lives dynamically change, they behold responsibilities, it's one of the most mature anime I've seen. Very real.
