I honestly think that the only reason most "Democrats" vote Democrat and most "Republicans" vote Republican is to keep the other out of office. It's the problem with any electoral system which tends towards a two-party majority.
Strongly agree. There are a lot of democrats who aren't happy with Obama but Romney scares the shit out of us (I'm one of them). If there were a legitimate third choice, a lot of us would go in that direction. There are also a lot of Republicans who aren't especially fond of Romney, whether it's his flip flopping, his being a moderate or his being a Mormon, and they're only voting for him because they're terrified of Obama. Sadly, the last time we had a third party candidate that was even close to being a legitimate candidate was when Ross Perot ran in 1992 (and even then he didn't get a single electoral college vote).
At very least, I'd like to see any election where one candidate doesn't get at least 50% of the vote to go into run-off. Candidates would have to establish themselves instead of simply bashing their opposition.
Personally, I'm hoping someone like Ron Paul can redefine the Republican party. I may disagree with him and his supporters, but they have a more consistant view of government and could be just what the Republicans need to come back from the brink of insanity; I can respect him even if I disagree with him. Right now, they seem to be the party of economic anarchy coupled with a theocratic government as far as social matters go and war mongering foreign policy. Do any of them realize how much this mirrors what we see in third world countries or places like Iran or North Korea? Is that who they're modeling US policy after?
