Well it depends. You don't have to know how to build a car engine from scratch to know the engine isn't run on pixy dust. The evedince it runs on gas can be proven when you go to the gas station over and over and over, and would also be proven if you put water in the tank instead, it would stop running wich is pretty predictable.
But for example, I do get a lip twitch when an atheist says something like "survival of the fittist" perpetuating a lie that Darwin advocated that.
But me for example, I cant do a fraction to save my life now. I used to remember much more stuff when I was in high school and college. But memories fade over time if you don't keep them up.
I DO however have never lost my knowledge of what scientific method is. You don't have to be a neurosurgon to know what the basic concept is. It is nothing more than the proven concept of testing and falsifying with control groups and then independent verification of both data and methodology.
So basically when a claim is made it is easy to figure out if there is truth to the claim without knowing what the claimant knows. If it cannot be tested or they don't want the scruteny of such, then the odds are highly likely it is nothing more than their pesonal pet whim. Things that are universal do not have to be protected by taboos or false use of changing a word into a slur because someone is uncomfortable with reality.
I don't mean to oversimplify logic but it can be as eas as asking that used car salesman if you can have the car checked out independently and they say "No" it is a safe bet they are selling you a lemon.
