Yeah, I'm open to the idea that people become atheists because it's cool, but I simply haven't seen it.
I suppose I can understand the idea of someone becoming an atheist to try to be a hipster, since our religious non-beliefs are hardly mainstream, but that says more about the hipsters than it does about us.
Fact is, I don't believe in God for the same reason I don't believe in fairies or dragons: I don't see suficient evicence to prove to me that they exist. If that's mainstream, cool, if not, that doesn't really matter much anyway; whether it's maintream or not doesn't make it any less true.
Honestly, though, I think the big difference between myself as an atheist and a hipster atheist is that I want my beliefs to be mainstream. I want people to start rejecting their belief in God simply because if we stop sitting around counting the number of angels dancing on the head of a pin, we can start accomplishing real things like curing cancer, ending poverty and starvation, fixing the energy crisis, dealing with global warming and finding an economic model that can support more than just the wealthy.
