In my opinion, the so-called "new atheism movement" has not popularized atheism, but it has popularized the labelling yourself as an atheist, now there are just more atheists that call themselves atheists.
However, there are still, nevertheless, many many atheists who don't label themselves as such: many people still don't believe in any gods whatsoever and yet they don't call themselves atheists and even if you asked some of them if they were atheists they would say "no" simply because they don't like the word.
In fact I'd say that the vast majority of atheists still don't label themselves as such.
