Being half of whatever usally allows one to see both 1/2s on equal footing, and things that are generally trivialized and dismissed in one culture is given a second or third chance to understand why things are the way that they are.

Nor have I ever come to much understanding of anything from being beaten (save that I don't particularly care for being beaten).

Most do not. That is why it is such an effective punishment. That is also the reason Crimes this punishment is attached to are next to non existant in those given soceities.
