"Nah, they'll never go for it."
I agree that 'they'll never go for it'; however, I think your timeline can be accelerated.
First, the oil won't last another two hundred years, so the power base disappears.
Second, if the Saudis think that Syria is as far east that the unrest spreads they are sadly mistaken.
no, they are right. Guess who wants and benefits from the unrest in Egypt and now Syria?
Oil won't last forever, but Saudis know so long as the west retains its morbid fear of Iran, saudiarabia can freely exploit the opportunity presented by the toppling of secular pan-arabist dictators like assad, mubarik, and be the power behind the scene subsiding Sunni Islamist players in these unreast, and move Sunni Arab world closer to defacto Saudi control.
When the middleeast unrest plays out, Saudi Arabia would have close relations with powerful and hitherto unfriendly egypt, and would have exorcised iranian inflence from syria. The biggest winner of the "arab spring " would be Saudi Arabia, and Iran and Israel its big losers.
