RE: Women in the Military More Likely to Be Traumatized by Sexual Assault Than Combat

My father threatened to kill me and my family with a shotgun when I was 3. I was molested when I was 5. I was raped when I was 16. What I find most traumatic of these experiences and others is the minimization of the trauma.
I've been in enough group therapy to be able to report that many rape survivors wish they had been killed instead of having to live through the psychological fallout. Rape victims have a higher rate of suicide than the average population, though I don't know how it compares to the suicide rate of those who have suffered from facing the possibility of their own death. To suggest that rape survivors' pain and trauma is somehow less than someone who has faced death is insensitive.
As I said earlier, trauma is relative. I've met people who have suffered comparatively less trauma, but have significantly more psychological problems than myself. I have also met people who have suffered more trauma, and are much healthier than myself. How well or how poorly one copes with traumatic events is highly individual, and often dependent upon what kind of support is available to the victim.
