Either are good. Ubuntu just comes with Pidgin by default, so it's easier for newbies 
And yes, I would never advise Kubuntu to a beginner. I've been using Linux for years and KDE still confuses the fuck out of me. I find it unusable compared to a nice simple GNOME interface (which Ubuntu has by default).
