But it was their theory, Chuck. And the reason they insisted on it was that they wanted HNS and HSS to be separate species incapable of interbreeding.

At this point it is back to the drawing board.

The notion that different species must be totally incapable of showing evidence of interbreeding is widely held and circulated, but false.

1. When two populations are sufficiently different such that when they fuck each other, their pool of offsprings would consistently exhibit demographic or phenotypical traits highly atypical of either parent population, these two population would, if alive today, be considered different species. So for example, if HSS and HNS are sufficiently similar to fuck, and to give rise to children, but only female children ever result from such union, then HSS and HNS would be considered different species. Or if HSS and HNS fuck, and all children are dwarves or giants, and have reduce fertility, compare to either parent population, then HSS and HNS would be considered different species.

2. When HSS and HNS can not directly interbreed, but do represent opposite ends of a still existent genetic continum, such that they can pass genes from one to the other through an intermediate population with whom they can both freely interbreed, then they would be different species but would be able to show signs that makes it appear as if they interbred.
