The 'waist of bullets' is a legitimate concern. Even though we don't actually shoot anyone when we execute them, we do have to spend a lot more executing them than we would have to spend keeping them imprisioned for the rest of their life. We have to pay to keep them separate from general population while in prison, we have to hire extra guards and pay for extra utilities to cover the area where they're being kept separate. We have to pay for them to get lawyers and appeal their trial and sentencing and everything. All those costs add up.
I'm not fond of prison work, though. Corporations are constantly looking for ways to get cheap labor and prison labor might be their best option. They can claim they're creating American jobs by hiring prisoners to work for them, but their workforce will make just $2.00 an hr. What's more, I'm hearing about prisons putting prisoners in telemarketing or other telephone sales positions. I don't exactly feel comfortable with the idea of people having to give out personal information to convicts like that.
