Just curious, do we have any stats for this information?
Right now, as I understand it, Australia is spending billions on "life sentences" and much more on it's refugee system.... I could be wrong since my information is from news sources.

Court cases in a democracy, where there is a fair justice system, are alway very expensive.
We could of course change into a dictatorship, abandone our fair justice systems and then reinterduce the deathpenalty as a costeffective thing without a fair trial.
Which would be bollocks.
Thankyou, I'm a bit time poor at the moment.
No one is assuming that there won't be a "fair trial" and due process. I am focusing on keeping said convicted alive for 20+ years as opposed to a death penalty.
