Ok, it's just that you called it an "old XP machine", which made me think you thought the OS (XP) was somehow important...it's not. Linux technically runs on a much more varied range of hardware than any other OS, because it is so lightweight and unbloated.
In any case, if you have backups and a Windows install CD, you can't make any irreversible changes. Alternatively, why not go and get a cheap internal hard drive and install Linux on that? Then if you want to switch back to Windows at some point, you can just switch hard drives.
