I think that the article writer is taking a metaphor literally. Here are two examples of grass being a carpet.

So this is what I think has happened where the article is concerned. The Quran just used a metaphor and the article writer is correct in saying that it shouldn't be interpreted to mean the Earth is flat. He/she then tried to prove that the metaphor referred to modern science when it doesn't.
