Just think of the number of people who would feel that they now had a reason to listen to the voices in their head, or the feelings in their heart.
Religion would suddenly become truly legitimate and a million new religions would blossom overnight, each with a unique vision of "what God wants them to do."
It would be a nightmare.
Rather than restraining people, it would let loose the monsters of the id with a renewed mandate from heaven.
People imagine that God wants them to do and believe the most absurd shit on the most insubstantial evidence now; what won't they believe if there's a gold standard backing their confirmation bias?
(On the other hand, the religious would suddenly become much easier to manipulate to whatever end that you might have in mind. ["It says in the bible to give away all your money. See! Lemme help you with that..."])
