We are certainly globally hegemonic, as demonstrated by our willingness to invest astronomical sums to maintain local military superiority in the backyard of literally everyone else that matters, in addition to global military superiority. To those who conceive American interest and intention to coincide with their own sense of justice this may seem innocuous, but to who doesn't like our power being greater then their power in their very own back yard, there is little practical distinction between our hegemonic power and hostile imperial power.
As to outright imperialism, the expedition to Iraq is certainly a very barely disguised, but breathtakingly, one might say insanely, ambitious act of imperialism, to plant military presence against the will of locals not just in their backyard, but in their very houses, for the long lasting benefit to American economy and security of American domination of the region. The fact that we proved to be totally incompetent imperialists doesn't change the fact that we had been, and no doubt will be again, enthusiastic imperialists.
