Priest jokes aside (as fun as they are), Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (I don't know much about the rest) all seem to use Religion to keep women from participating "too much". From what I was told by a follower of the B'hai, a break-away from Islam, that they take one of the most lenient positions in that area. Even the idea of educating women more than a century ago was considered heretical in practice. In Judaism, one can find it in the Talmud ("It says 'and you shall teach your sons/children (בניך). This mean your sons, and not your daughters' - mesechet Kiddushin).
I am certain that there are authoritative texts in Christianity and Islam that echo this, since it is unlikely that it's just a tradition.
It's a shame, really, that one who is unluky enough to be born with the wrong chromoson set, is shoved in the dark, as in "You are not good enough to lead, but feel free to be led:.
