Video games generally are a waste of time. Lots of things are, like watching TV, listening to the radio, hanging out on the front steps, and so on. They are activities that are designed to help pass the time, which we could have done something else with. They're enjoyable, which can lead us to spend even more time on them than we planned. Sometimes we can learn from them, just like we can learn something by watching educational TV or listening to the news on the radio. People seem to have a need to unwind after the stresses of a normal day, and so we devise entertainment.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
