It's quite saddening that state legislators have the power to oppress minorities, such as South Carolina's prohibition of atheists holding public office, the segregation of Negroes and Whites spanning from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century, and the current practice of restricting benefits to homosexual couples.
