However your nation has a Supreme Court which is willing to strike down as unconstitutional such state laws. For example; it might strike down the various bans on legal recognition of same sex marriages some states have.
Our High Court here in Australia, apart from transferring powers from the state to the federal government does not do those sort of actions.
