I find that most people aren't against it philosophically but if it is put alongside the fact that it would allow religious people like the Mormons to marry multiple wives then there can be an irrational knee jerk reaction against polygamy/polyandry as a whole because people can tend to think if it is from a religion then it is bad.
If many women wish to share on man that is their business. The objections to polygamy always seem to take the point of view that the men collect the women like it or not. Maybe it goes back to the beginning when men paid the fathers and the daughters had no choice.
The US rejection of it was not because it was unbiblical but because the Christians adopted Roman monogamy.
