That's the scary part. If they believed that it worked, they have incentive to try again. If they believed that it didn't work, they might decide that they didn't do it right, and try again.
At the same time, the criminally insane can use religion as a tool for their horrific actions, but if they didn't I think they'd find some other way to rationalize their desire to murder babies.
