You're alluding to a different measure, one that involves not a one-dimensional left-right spectrum but a two-dimensional one that also includes an authoritarian/libertarian spectrum. But yes, the GOP has been creating a more intrusive government, just one that wants to get into the bedroom rather than the boardroom.
