I guess there's a little Darwinist in me that says let them do what they want, they're taking their own risks and will suffer the consequences, natural selection. I agree it's unfair to subject helpless kids and possibly jeopardize their lives... But I also think its impossible to stop parents who are convinced raw milk is the way to go from giving it to their kids. I'm generally a live and let live person... But there's something to possible mass public infections, in which case public health trumps individual desires. Maybe it should just be banned...(June 3, 2013 at 11:12 am)festive1 Wrote: I kinda agree with you... Kids should be protected from their parent's stupidity... But I'm not a fan of over-regulating parenting either... I'm on the fence I guess
If we agree that parents shouldn't be allowed to choose faith healing over FDA and AMA approved medical treatment, then they shouldn't be allowed to chose non FDA approved milk.
When you are 18 years old, you have the right to chose for yourself what you want to do to your body and yourself. People should not have the "right" to chose things that carry an active risk of fatal or severe infection for their children. We make clear instructions on medicines and you're not supposed to dose your kid. If caught doing so, you will be prosecuted. The same should be said for things like that - feed your kid raw milk, prosecute for irresponsible parenting.
There's absolutely nothing in raw milk that would outweigh the cost benefit of pasteurized milk. These people are fucking retarded, and children shouldn't have to pay the price of parents wanting to live in the stone age rather than the 21st century. We say the same all the time about kids being raised by religious wackos and their out-of-date scientific principles. Why not this too?

We vax against fucking chicken pox, could you imagine the mass hysteria if there were some mutant small/cow pox outbreak, which could happen with this raw milk craze...

Those cultures that leveraged cattle (or other milk producers) heavily have a very widespread distribution of the mutation in question. If you don't have it, don't drink it - really simple.

Anywhere else that aint gonna cut it. We fortified milk with D because we identified a serious absence of it;s presence - and this was back when people spent alot of time outside. So no dice. By the by, that fortification process is what gives milk, for me, it;s pleasant taste. I fucking hated drinking milk straight from the udder - even after it'd been separated. Tastes like creamy urine.
Not to mention Rickets is really not a good thing to develop...
