It'd be intriguing on what you think of a country having a military force in the first place, it sounds like you think any death for any cause is pointless. If you don't think people should die for their ideals, then what do you think people should fight to the death die for, nothing?
It's pragmatism, mostly; I can do more good alive than dead, and so I'll take the option if it's presented to me. I'm an organism, it's in my genes, but it's also just the sensible option. I am a pacifist in that I'd prefer to avoid conflict, but I'm not nearly idealistic enough to preclude the possibility everywhere. But even in inevitable conflict, any death is a waste, whether it's for a belief or not.
I just don't think there's anything noble about dying. If you can, stay alive. If someone offers you the choice to live, take it; dead people can't affect change. And there's a difference between being murdered for your beliefs and dying for them; the latter puts you specifically in harm's way, which I believe should be avoided over things like ideals, for the reasons detailed above.
