Being a Christian or an Atheist makes one neither automatically stupid nor intelligent, and I'd like to think there are more options than that - it's a bit of a false dilemma, no?

I think it is a false dilemma, but like I said I read a thread on here where Atheists were bashing a Christian they had not met based on second hand knowledge from another Atheist poster. The thread link follows,

I wanted the question of intelligence, and possibly the one I asked about ignorance if the Mod will allow, out of the way before I further engage the Atheists on this forum.

Well, it's true second hand knowledge can be and is often distorted - but we can still comment on it. On top of that, he provided something more concrete, a link to a study, for people to discuss. Now if he said "Because of this experience of mine with a christian ALL CHRISTIANS are fucking stupid" and people agreed with him, based on his experience alone, then I would object. But I don't see much of a problem with what went on in that thread; you could argue we don't know if the christian is an asshole based upon what he said, but calling him an asshole was not central to any atheist's argument.
