Because I often travel to Alabama it kinda pains me to read this thread. I headed over to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_peo...om_Alabama
to see if I could come up with a list of notables to counter the allegations...sigh. When the list includes Wernher von Braun I had to doubt all other names, saying von Braun is from Alabama because he lived and worked there for a time at Huntsville is a bit of a reach.
Long on politicians, sports stars and musicians - short on scientists and authors.
Did find two Surgeon Generals and one Secretary of State (C. Rice) plus the inventor of vinyl (W. Semon) and...
the true saving grace of Alabama is that E.O. Wilson, the great Pulitzer Prize winning (twice) biologist, was born there.
