"The Big Deal" (which isn't half so entertaining as "The Big Lebowski") is that people have been conned into thinking someone took all the punishment for their own ills and their neighbors, giving them a free out with at least one god trotting around at the time. And maybe that god would stick it to the dirty Roman gods who'd been allowing their worshipers to run roughshod on them.
