And perhaps your claim that they were looking for an excuse is just a defense mechanism against acknowledging that people can try your religion and come to the conclusion that it isn't real?

.... (more likely) they are lazy, and don't think they need church or religion.
I've known them all for years...20+ as a matter of fact! I see them at churches for weddings, funerals and memorials for fallen brothers & sisters.
They don't hate religion or God... they hate responsibility. Like most who don't practice their faith.
