This is exceedingly stupid when you consider that as of 2011 the Detroit public school district was $327 million dollars in debt, and the solution offered was to close half the schools, sending the average classroom size to 60 children. I'm not sure if that solution was ever implemented, but I'm sure the debt remains.
Plus, the owner of the Red Wings not only owns the Tigers, also, he is the multi-billiionare founder of Little Caesars Pizza. He's the last guy that needs a handout.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is Detroit was not simply decimated by an economy that hit a recession nearly a decade before the rest of the country and a failing automotive industry. It was also destroyed by corrupt politicians like this guy. It seems highly likely that that type of corruption played a part in this deal.
