The worst poverty I've seen? Toss up between shanty towns outside of Nairobi and Mombassa in Kenya. They were HUGE! They comprised of rusty tin and scrap metal/wood structures with literally thousands of people living in them. Or a Massai village I visited which consisted of cow-dung huts, no clean water (an elephant had broken their well cover and contaminated it), about a hundred tiny little kids, and lots of goats and cows. The men stood around shooting the shit and the women were carrying water from the nearest stream (some five miles away) and bundles of firewood which easily weighed around fifty pounds each.
In Nairobi I saw some interesting beggars. The most memorable was also a toss up. Between an old, obviously blind, man being lead around a median in a highly trafficked area by an at most 4 year old. That or the lepers and polio victims.
I went on Safari to Kenya several years ago. Yes the proverty is horrendous but it doesn't compare to what I saw in Addis Ababa on the way back.
We were supposed to change planes there but we were late and they didn't hold our connecting flight. We arrived on the Sunday and ended up leaving on the Wednesday.
They put us up in a hotel of sorts and we befriended a Doctor from Medcine Sans Frontiers. He took us round. It was a shattering experience.
