The republicans have historically been the party of big business. Somewhere in the 70's and early 80's they figured out that they needed a better demographic hook so they sold out to the religious right. A gang of evangelical nut jobs who want to shove jesus up everyone's asshole.
That alliance continues but it is aging and they will not or cannot adapt to the new demographic realities of the country. Hence they continue to insult women, blacks and latinos at almost every turn.
Recognizing this they have turned to what is euphemistically called "voter suppression tactics" to prevent minorities from voting to the greatest extent possible.
"Whites" are not - and have never been - a single voting block.
