A little bit about me: I'm an atheist, I enjoy mixing video games and alcohol, and while cooking is an excellent hobby, there is a time and place for a large bowl of cheap ramen.

Thanks for reminding me of the fact that my X360 is broken, new guy. Thanks for thatTongue

What kind of purpose can be derived from a life without religion?

One inescapeable fact I've had trouble accepting when I was religious, is that we exist. I know that sounds elementary but to me giving up god layed a lot of anger I had about the world to rest. I asked the same question and answered it myself by looking around this world and seeing the best it has to offer. I started with people I love and decided life is worthwhile living it just to love. That of course, is just one of many reasons but it's so blatantly obvious and fulfilling. The concept of love is not copywrittejn by the theists. Its a mandatory part of our biology that propogates our survival.
Quote:What kind of meaning comes from being the current state of DNA that's simply trying to further its line?

I probably can't have my own kids so I asked myself, what good am I, then? I read an article a while back about cloned mice and how experience has been proven to alter the epigenome. So pretty much if I give someone a good experience or impact them positively then I know I'm altering their very genetics . Therefore I decided to be that pebble that creates ripples in the water that go on forever and ever and propagates the overall health of the system (that pebbles motion does far more for the environment than just cause ripples). I would imagine that if I were to have a child I would want to further evolutionary progress within that being by giving it the best chance I can for the betterment of humanity. Controlling my emotions, using my time as best I can to achieve the highest level of survival as possible (like taking care of my body and environment), and passing on what I've learned and experienced through my actions and genetics is a huge gift and makes me happy. I live my life in hopes that I will have a child one day and that the medications I've been on (chemo) did not take that ability away completely.

is not existence enough of a purpose and reason to live it the best way possible?

:Welcome:
hope you stick around for longer than just an introductory thread.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.
