Moses demands all non virginal females and male children put to the sword, too, and this after the fact. I guess even the soldiers hadn't planned on that. Nope, Yahweh's mouthpiece had to get that ball rolling. It would seem to me that anyone who 'plays up' the, ahem, restraint, of the army assuming they weren't raping is overlooking the rest of the horrors endorsed by their loving god.
