If you were a god and one of your flock was wavering in his faith, would kidnapping his cat (catnapping?) truly be the most convincing demonstration of your existence, your power and your fitness for worship? Would you say "Right, I know how to make this guy love me again - I'll take away the thing most precious to him!" You only have to watch Fatal Attraction to see how well that works out.
