I've never had food poisoning and haven't had the flu in years. The day that I renounced my Christianity, I got food poisoning. My thought process was linear with yours- "is god punishing me?" That's when I realized how indoctrinated I was. There were ex-christians and non believers all around me that were getting along just fine through life... most better than myself. We as humans try to correlate ideas with experience, ie: objects in the clouds or blessings/ curses from god or the devil or what-not. Freak occurrences and coincidences happen all the time. I wouldn't put much stock into it. Even if he exists, he's not going to take your cat to make a point. What kind of god would that be? People that never should have children, have them and expose them to all kinds of things that they should not whereas really good hearted people can never conceive. Then there's Abraham's wife Sarah who conceived at a very old age to throw that in people's faces to instill meaningless hope. There's no intelligent design in that and there's no intelligent being 'proving' himself with your situation.
