The arguments in favor of atheism are overwhelming, while atheism and its proponents have become much more prominent in recent years. Its quite easy to win debates on the subject without developing any real intellectual depth. To call yourself an atheist and defend the position used to be much harder than it is now. Much less independent thinking is required because the best talking points have already been pointed out by people like Richard Dawkins. Those of us who came before had to figure it out for ourselves.
I don't really care about popularity, but once you get a few years of trying to argue with theists you will find yourself wasting your time, e.g. the playing chess with a pigeon allegory. There may be atheist fanboys of Dawkins, Hitchens, etc, but they don't really matter to me, all there is, is layer after layer of bullshit, and if you are willing to entertain that, be my guest. I prefer to discuss matters sans imaginary beings. I am open to know any gods, but I don't want it to be a personal whim that I push into others, because I feel it.
