You're missing out on so much good music though. Don't listen to the mainstream shit though, most of that shit is mothafuckas trying to act tough and gangsta. You gotta really search for the good stuff though because its been buried by commercial hip hop. I'll have to add some videos later because I'm on my phone, but just off the top of my head:
Mos Def
Del the Funky Homosapien (also Deltron 3030 which is one of his side groups)
Brother Ali
Talib Kweli
Eyedea & Abilities
El-P
Illogic
Immortal Technique
Murs
A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
KRS - One
Public Enemy (obviously)
Wu-Tang Clan
There's a bunch more that I know for sure I'm forgetting, but those are some of my favorites.
Also yes, Kanye is a gigantic douche. But his old school stuff is fantastic, hell even as much as I dislike most mainstream music I can't help but like some of his new stuff too. He is an absolute genius but it just went straight to his head.
That is the same with all types of music. The "good" stuff can get to the top in any type of music, but, the artists that really deserve it, IN ANY TYPE, are the least likely to get there.
I think the real issue isn't taste. I think the real issue is accepting when someone gets big, AND deserves it, there is a huge difference between crap, and getting there because you deserve it.
ABBA deserved it, Woodie Guthrie deserved it, Cher deserved it, Metallica deserved it. As well as Thin Lizzy who didn't get as famous.
The Ramones got a bit far, but not as far as they should have. Living Color were much more talented than Jimmy Hendrix.
All I can say about rap and country, is it simply is not my taste. Neither is baseball or golf. But I am not going to say merely because I don't like those things, they do not take talent.
