Well written, and very nice of you to share. One of the things that I've found about "joining" anything with an agenda, any cause, (religion, political party, PETA, NRA ,ACLU, etc.), is that it automatically puts you into an, "us and them", situation. This makes it very easy to legitimize, justify, and even fuels some people's need to judge and hate. It's the dirty little secret people who embrace causes witness, but rarely talk about.
When "Christians" do it, it's especially strange, since one of the basic lessons Jesus tried to teach over, and over, and over again was: "Do not judge others." I'm not going to start quoting scripture, but I can think of at least 3 times the subject was brought up... and his followers were told, in no uncertain terms, not to do it.
I believe a huge part of your relief is you're no longer being a hypocrite, which you were, if you were judging others, and claiming to be a Christian. As far as Christian hypocrisy goes, this example is just the tip of a very large iceberg, but it is something you made a point of mentioning.
Again, thanks for the post.
