For those of you who don't know, I live in Romania and come from a moderate family, though at school I was taught religion the fundamentalist way. I was a fundamentalist untill 7th grade, then I talked with one of my dad's friends, and he convinced me to become moderate. I thaught that my parents were fundamentalists too, so I didn't tell them anything untill 8th grade, then I found out that they were moderates the whole time. What surprises me is that they didn't seem to take things seriously enough, not even my mom. As I mentioned, I had a discussion with them about the religion I was taught in school, one day later my mom discussed it again with me. This time however, the discussion was much shorter, and it was more about the fact that I was sad and kept the sadness inside of me (which is true). Years later, I talked to my mom about this topic again, and she said to me that she didn't know that the religion class would be like this, since at her time religion wasn't taught in schools. And that was it! How can mom be so careless about this? She is a moderate after all! Why wasn't she more concerned about the fact that her only child was brainwashed from first grade at school right under her nose? Granted, I didn't tell her things like "Nonbelievers go to Hell!", but I didn't only because I taught that she also believed them and there was no need to. She might not have learned religion at school, but that's no excuse, she could've asked me about it, she could've take a look at my books. In fact she did look at my books, she helped me with homework, how didn't she observe anything? And after I told her about all of this, why did she talk so little to me? I didn't talk much to her either, but I was just a child, I thaught that everything was fine. She's the adult, why wasn't she more preoccupied with this? If she knew that the religion in school was fundamentalist, why didn't she teach me more about her version of the religion? Nowadays I don't want any religion, not just because of this experience, I studied more beliefs and I observed the world around me untill I became an agnostic atheist.
I really can't understand this, she's generally a good mom, how can she be so careless about this? She sees religion as a way to get happines, so I can understand why she doesn't want to leave it. I can also understand why she wouldn't start a protest against the system. What I can't understand is why didn't she talk more to me about this. If she's so careless, how is she expecting me to keep my faith?
