Saerules, I'll have to check out Doyle's biography on him, it must be outrageously awesome! What is so fascinating, to me, about Holmes is that despite all of his callous behavior, his rudeness, even his own opinion on the field of detective work, he was one of the most compassionate men in all of fiction. That is to say, to him it was second nature to care so deeply for all of mankind that he would undertake, even at great pains to his own mental health, the task which he did.
It'swhat makes him so intriguing.

Holmes did do cocaine, not sure about heroin though. I haven't read all of the books. xP Holmes basically used cocaine as an outlet for hyper-charging his brain when he didn't have a case or problem to put his mind to.
