The major problem with the Republican party is that their political candidates, like say for president, have to appeal to the far right in order to get nominated, but they then have to try to appeal to moderates and liberals in the general election without pissing off those on the far right, who often have the attitude of "If you're not with us, you're against us," and if you don't agree 110% with them they think you're a RINO and will turn on you. But the problem with trying to appeal to the far right in the first place is that sound bytes now last forever on the internet, and the crazy things you say when you're trying to appeal to the crazy right will come back to haunt you when you're going up against a Democrat in the actual election. Or, if they're genuinely batshit crazy and are one of the people they pander to, they have no clue as to how to appeal to mainstream voters.
It's a problem that the GOP needs to fix if they ever hope to win the presidency again, unless the Democrats have a major fuck up.
