Merrill was pretty cute but I didn't find the characters in DA:2 to be all that interesting. I guess towards the end Anders comes into his own quite a bit (won't spoil anything, but I guess I kind of am by saying this but whatever), and you get a better sense of what he's all about, but otherwise most of the characters are quite bland and boring as companions go IMO.
