It's what people have made of the number(s).... on both sides of the issue.
Why do people avoid "13"... including planes, hotels, businesses etc?
When you are brought up to be superstitious....
Neil DeGrasse Tyson talked about this once. About how elevators avoid 13 (in the west, in parts of the east it is the number 4), and avoid negative numbers and why it is a problem.
That is so true, from my own experience dealing with a lot of kids' math, these people are afraid of negative numbers. They suddenly suck at simple calculation once negatives show up.
