Ideally, I can see how simplifying is a good plan, but it isn't an ideal world. I don't buy into the keeping up with the Joneses/American Dream™ side of materialism, yet living in a cave and eating berries goes too far austerity wise. The middle ground for a family happens to cost more than $3000. Skipping on a Lexus for a Kia only saves you so much.
