It's technical definition is, "love of wisdom".

Sure, then i suppose you also know what is wisdom, where it can come from and where it lead to isn't it?
Otherwise you can also say that cancer means crab without knowing why the cancer was called crab in the first place.

However, more often than not it's anything but.

That is the problem with most of the words.
Originally meant something else.
That is why religions born out of spirituality which has nothing to do with religions.
Philosophy is the same.
Today it has become intellectual extravaganza while in the past meant connecting the small to the big or the microcosm to the macrocosm in theory.
