If I were presented with an ancient text which offered clear, unambiguous predictions ('In a city called "Christchuch" in a place called "New Zealand" an earthquake will cause the death of 185 people on 22 February 2011' not 'A city will suffer the wrath of God') I would be inclined to take it seriously.
I doubt, though, that I would jump to the 'goddidit' conclusion.
