This goes a bit beyond internal use, "only where necessary." That you continue to attempt to justify yourself is probably the worse crime. As I said, we all make mistakes, and if your investigating it privately was not an abuse — which I will accept may have been the case, as similar researches are indeed a legitimate part of administrating a forum — then that's all well and good. The major error, in my view, was using information gained through administration privilege to try and get one up on Jacob, for reasons that, again, imho, appear to have been nothing more than an attempt to gratify your own ego and followup your earlier complaints about him. That, I believe, is not a mistake that can be justified by any appeal to the rules. But as said, we all make mistakes, the real test is how we deal with our mistakes, whether we take responsibility for our actions and amend our wrongs, or simply try to sweep them under the rug with ad hoc justifications. To my view, and apparently that of others, you are doing the latter. I see your response in this as completely lacking in any humility and virtue, or even remorse. That, to my view, is the mistake that's hard to excuse on the basis of you "being human" and fallible like the rest of us. That seems to me to reveal a character flaw.
(ETA: And before someone else points it out, let me point out that I was probably doing something remarkably similar in trying to justify in shoutbox, PM, and threads, my abusive treatment of other staff members in the staff / moderator threads. I'm not claiming any halo for myself, either. I have some amends that never got done in my case.)
(ETA2: Seeing myself reflected in Rayaan's mirror, I feel somewhat more charitable towards him, but things still need to be set to rights.)
