Yep, you have to start with the premise that God is good. As long as you maintain that you can explain away anything.
What can be interesting is asking a Christian "How do you know God is good"? The answer tends to be along the lines of faith, or "It's in his nature", or "you can't judge God". If you judge God by his own biblical morals then he is not good, which creates a problem.
More reasonable would be to believe in a slightly flawed God, after all we are flawed and supposedly in his image. It would sort out a lot of bible plot problems. However most people don't want to worship a flawed immoral God.
